What is Recycled Asphalt Millings? Basically R.A.M. is old asphalt that is ground into gravel, that hardens/binds together when compacted. The best gravel to leave exposed for a long time is R.A.M (Recycled Asphalt Millings), when covered with a sprayed on application of liquid asphalt the R.A.M.will begin to bind the asphalt back together . Although R.A.M.will never harden as hot asphalt would it will get hard in time. This will make for great product on any driveway, parking lot or farm lane.
How is the product applied?? The paving process starts out the same as hot asphalt mix. Proper grading and excavation is required to ensure adequate water drainage. At Blackrock Paving, we install R.A.M. with our power paving machines . This process helps ensure that the material stays uniform and consistent. By using the paver and vibratory roller, the finished product is level and more smooth than when installed with a tractor or dozer, it will also bind together better .This product has much of the original oils still in it.After installation is complete, the heat from the sun will help to melt the gravel into one uniform piece of pavement, which will produce less dust than ordinary gravel/dirt.
Why should I consider R.A.M. instead of regular gravel? Gravel driveways are only as good as the gravel used. For example crush n run when wet will still produce a muddy surface. Some river bank gravel’s are very sandy, get very sloppy in rain, and don’t compact well. Most good compact-able gravels are man-made and called processed gravel. Some processed gravel’s are more expensive than R.A.M., and do not hold up to rain and snow as well. Most processed gravel’s contain a clay mix which has great compacting features but the clay gets soupy and soft when wet. A driveway constructed from R.A.M. Will not produce a sloppy mess because of the original asphalt that it is made with will harden and be more stable than most other types of gravel.
Snow plowing will not displace as much onto your lawn, which means less clean up in the spring. R.A.M. will also act as a great base, should you decide to pave over it with hot-mix asphalt or tar and gravel / chip seal in the future.
Is it cost effective??Yes, It cost less, because it is a Recycled Asphalt. A driveway constructed with R.A.M is a gravel drive that hardens in time, not a hot-mix asphalt driveway, but in almost all cases it cost much less depending on how much prep work and the thickness of material applied
In the world we live in today it is a great way to Go Green with Recycled Asphalt Millings,Besides the cost benefit, this product is environmentally friendly and safe to use in all areas ( around water) and animals what positive method of recycling.
